Locations Outside Of The Cong Area

To get to the two storey house used in the back projection during the courting scene when Sean and Mary Kate were on the sidecar with Michaeleen Og as their chaperone the following directions are the simplest to follow but will entail doubling back at one stage. Continue from Cong for 3.3 miles until you come to a T-Junction, turn left and take the first road to the right, the house is the first Two Storey House on your left. It is seen in the film when the camera is facing Sean Thornton.
Come back onto the main road and head for Cornamona by turning right on the main road. Continue until you come to Mac's Bar in Cornamona on your left. Turn round and head back for Cong for 0.8 miles. Once leaving Mac's Bar you will go round the first corner to the right and around another corner to your left up a slight hill. A few yards on your left after this hill is a narrow road covered with grass. Walk in this side road for 33 yards then on your left just over the wall is where Martin Conroy's cottage was. Sadly this cottage no longer exists. It was used in the scene when Sean was riding his horse and Father Lonergan commented "Ah those were the bad days," and Sean with a face as dark as the black Hunter he rode. He rode past Conroy's cottage and there was smoke coming out of the chimney.
Continue back into Cornamona. Take the road for An-Mam (Mamm Bridge) by turning right after Conroy's cottage after climbing the first very steep hill look out for a Castle on Lough Corrib to your left, it is Castle Kirke location 28. After Castle Kirke look out for Leckaure View House B&B on your left from this B&B take the first corner to the left and the second corner to the left go up a steep hill and around a third corner to the left and when you get to the top of the hill stop in safety. There is one gate on your left and another on your right with 50 yards between them. There are locations inside both gates. There is a gap in the wall inside the gate on your left, it is here that Mary Kate is sitting, while she is putting on her shoes, after running through the stream. In the other field across the road is Clements mine on the right. This field was used when Sean threw his bowler hat away and Mary Kate ran through the field.
At An Mam "Maam Bridge" at Keane's Bar take a left turn for Maam Cross and Galway. After the first corner to the left on this road you will come to a bridge. Under this bridge flows the Failmore River which flows in front of White O'Mornin' Cottage. After another 100 metres on your right is White O'Mornin' Cottage, also at this location is the Failmore River, the Footbridge and the Road leading to the cottage. location 22. At Maam Cross turn left and take the N59 for Oughterard and Galway you will see three lakes on your right. After the third lake and Derrerglinna School on your left take the road to your right. This will bring you to Leam Bridge location 23. After leaving Leam Bridge head back for Maam Cross and take the N59 straight through for Clifden.
In Clifden take the road on your left for Ballyconnelly and roundstone. If you stand on the bridge, the Glendowen River will be flowing under facing Clifden from this bridge on your right behind you is the Ivy Lodge on your left is Clifden Jail, also in the film you can see the church spire location 25.
Take the N59 for Westport straight through Letterfrack. After1.4 miles turn left at the sign for Kylemore Abbey Victorian Gardens. After 40 yards on this road is the location used in the tandem courting scene. Go back out and turn left for Kylemore Abbey. Drive past the main entrance of Kylemore Abbey, at the end of the green hedgerow on your left a few hundred metres after that you will come to a bridge between two lakes, this bridge is the Red Bridge location 26. 5 km after Kylemore Abbey you will come to Creeragh Church with its very unusual roof. 2.5 km after this church you will see sign posting for Renvyle. Take that road to your left for Renvyle. Drive on until you come to Lettergesh Post Office on your left. Stand with your back to the Post Office and you will get the best view of Lettergesh beach location 24. Continue on past Lettergesh beach for Tullycross and Renvyle. Watch out for Lettergesh National School on your right. Continue until you come to a bridge with stone walls on each side. Go up a steep hill and down the other side at the bottom of this hill his where Sean Kicked the stone with a cottage in the background, at the top of the road he looked left and right and turned left and walked up the hill, before the next location we see Sean climb over a small wall into a Field. Heading towards Tullycross from where Sean kicked the stone, go round the 1st corner to the left and the 2nd corner to the left and 3rd corner to the left. Go up a steep hill and 3/4 of the way up this hill on the right is Paddy Keane's Gap, it's a small timber gate about 3 feet wide, this is the location were Sean dropped the stolen tandem when they escaped from Michaeleen, sadly I have been informed that the gate is no longer there as the road as been widened.
Directions for Thoor Ballylee
Take the road from Cong to Galway, follow the sign for Limerick through Clarenbridge, Kilcolgan and Ardrahan after Ardrahan there is a road to the left for Thoor Ballylee. Watch out for the signpost for Yeats Tower and Thoor ballylee, its 2km from this sign to Thoor Ballylee, location 21.
Directions for Ballyglunin Station
Take the road for Headford from Cong, turn left in Headford for Tuam. In Tuam at the square take the Dublin/Athlone road. After 100 metres turn right for Athenry. After 9.6km at the Palm Tree Bar turn left. At the next crossroads in front of you is location 20 Cross Bridge. Turn right and location 18 Ballyglunin Station is on your left , after the Ballyglunin Post Office. About 500 metres from Ballyglunin Station on the Athenry side is location 19 The Palace Bridge.
Directions for Ross Errilly Abbey
Take the road for Headford from Cong, just before Headford you will see Ross Errilly Abbey on your right. Drive into Headford, turn right and right again for Ross Errilly Abbey location 17.
