With the arrival from back east of Barbara Forsythe {Phyllis Fraser} the doctor's daughter, O'Brien happily changes the blackboard population sign from two to five.

She and Rusty are greatly attracted, but she doesn't know how to deal with his dislike for the book's author.

He steals a steer from the Three Mesquiteers, and is hired by the Mesquiteers to help with their herd of cattle but things don't go according to plan.
