Cecilia Parker born on 26 April 1905 in Fort William, Ontario, Canada. Daughter of a British army officer, moved with her family to Hollywood when she was a child. After graduation from high school she got a job as an extra. She did extra work for about a year before she was noticed by Fox executives, who signed her to a contract in 1931. Her career went along steadily if not spectacularly until 1937, when she was signed by MGM to play the older sister of Mickey Rooney in the "Andy Hardy" series. Although she had worked in everything from westerns to jungle serials, it is this part that people remember her for. She must have given MGM some trouble at one point, because in 1941 she was loaned out to ultra-cheapjack studio P.R.C for one picture, a fate that usually befell actors who displeased the higher-ups at the studios. All was apparently forgiven, though, as she made five more pictures at MGM before she retired in 1942. Drama's, Comedy and Westerns, Though no relation to comedian Chester Conklin, Charles "Heinie" Conklin spent his early film years at Chester's alma mater, Mack Sennett's Keystone studios; in later years, Heinie claimed to be one of the original Keystone Kops. Heinie's silent-screen makeup consisted of heavy eyebrow lining and a thinnish, upside-down, painted-on variation of Kaiser Wilhelm's moustache. In areas where anti-German sentiments still ran high during the post-World War 1 era, Conklin was billed on screen as Charlie Lynn. One of Conklin's first talkie appearances was as the addled military hospital patient in All Quiet on the Western Front 1930. He spent most of his sound career in microscopic bit roles, often appearing at Columbia studios in support of such 2-reeler stars as The Three Stooges, Andy Clyde, Hugh Herbert and Harry Langdon. Born Charles Edward Peil on 18 January 1883 in Racine, Wisconsin, USA, Enjoying a screen career that began in 1908 and lasted until the early '50s, Edward Peil Sr. remains one of those faces every lover of classic Hollywood movies knows so well but just cannot quite place. A barnstormer of the old school, Peil supported legendary stage diva Helena Modjeska in road companies of such theatrical classics as The Witching Hour and Brewster's Millions. Although he had dabbled in motion picture acting as early as 1908 (probably with the Philadelphia-based Lubin company), Peil came into his own with D.W. Griffith, who cast him as Evil Eye in Broken Blossoms 1919 and Swan Way in Dream Street (1921), not exactly characterizations that will endear him to modern, more politically correct moviegoers. Peil, whose last name was often misspelled "Piel," performed more evil-doing later in the decade, although age had a mellowing effect and he increasingly began playing gentleman ranchers, the heroine's father/uncle, decent lawmen, and the like, carving out a whole new career for himself in the field of B-Westerns. According to genre expert Les Adams, Peil made a total of 104 sound Westerns and 11 serials, adding the "Sr." to his name when his namesake son dropped his previous moniker of Johnny Jones. One of the great innovators in the TV medium, Kovacs wasn't nearly as well served by the cinema, where his multifarious talents were pretty much ignored and what work he did get was mainly as a character actor. As that, though, he was able to make something of an impression, especially in the witchcraft comedy Bell, Book and Candle 1958 and in a role as a somewhat menacing Cuban in Our Man in Havana 1960. Kovacs' other films include Operation Mad Ball 1957, his first, North to Alaska 1960, and Sail a Crooked Ship 1961. His best work, though, was seen on the small screen; his TV series combined his offbeat humour with pioneering special effects in a way that was practically surrealistic. A car crash took his life at the height of his career. His two daughters by his first wife also died in auto accidents, actress Mia Kovacs died in an auto accident on May 8, 1982. Born Hermon Reed Howes on 5 July 1900 in Washington, District of Columbia, USA Howes served as an apprentice seaman in the U.S. Navy during the last year of the First World War. After the war, he graduated from the University of Utah and attended Harvard Graduate School, then appeared in small parts in stock and vaudeville shows. A strikingly handsome man, he was chosen to be a model for artist J.C. Leyendecker's famous Arrow Collar ads. Howes was only one of several models for the ads (others include John Barrymore, Fredric March, Brian Donlevy, and Jack Mulhall), but alone of all the future actors who was a model for Leyendecker, he has been remembered as "the former Arrow Collar Man." Actor-director-producer Ben F. Wilson noticed the handsome model and signed him up to appear in films. Howes quickly became a popular leading man and played opposite many of the most famous actresses of the day. Johnny Mack Brown born on 1 September 1904 Dothan, Alabama, USA. An All-American halfback while attending the University of Alabama, Johnny Mack Brown would choose the silver screen over the green grass of the football field when he graduated. Signed to a contract with MGM in 1926, Brown debuted in Slide, Kelly, Slide 1927 with William Haines in a film about - baseball. This was followed by The Bugle Call 1927, which starred the fading Jackie Coogan. In 1928 he would appear in the last Norma Shearer silent film, A Lady of Chance 1928. After that, he would work with Greta Garbo, Marion Davies and Mary Pickford. His muscular good looks would only carry Brown so far in films, however, and by 1930 he had yet to find his place. At MGM Clark Gable was taking the roles that Brown was up for, so he went into a western for director King Vidor, Billy the Kid 1930. While Vidor did not want him for the part to begin with, the picture was successful; however, Brown's career at MGM would soon end. As with most of the early cowboy stars, he was a hero to millions of young children and consistently among the top ten money-makers in westerns from 1942-50. The bubble burst, though, just as it did for Allan Lane, in 1953, as the days of the "B" western came to an end. Brown retired in 1953 after making over 200 films, Johnny only appeared once with Wayne in the film Picture from Born To The West 1937 Aka Hell Town. John Qualen was born in Canada to Norwegian parents. His father was a minister. The family moved to the United States and Qualen (whose real name was Kvalen) grew up in Elgin, Illinois. He won an oratory contest and was given a scholarship to North-western University. His interest in acting was piqued there, and he began appearing in tent shows on the Lyceum-Chautauqua circuit, and in stock. He went to New York in 1929 and got his big break as the Swedish janitor in Elmer Rice's Street Scene. He repeated the role two years later in the film version. That same year he first worked for director John Ford in Arrowsmith 1931. He became a member of Ford's famed "stock company, and had prominent roles for Ford for the next thirty-five years.
